Default Nancy Hall: Lady Gaga to turn heads of a new generation at Mohegan Sun Arena

In the late ’90s, people began to clamor about the new princesses of pop. Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera were both touted as “the new Madonna.” In 2003, Madge herself seemingly passed the torch to the pair with a much talked about performance at that year’s MTV Video Music Awards.

I think, perhaps, people should have waited a bit longer. The woman who bares a bit more resemblance to the Material Girl will perform Monday at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Lady Gaga captured the world’s attention last year and hasn’t let go. Her catchy songs and shocking stage presence have already earned her a spot in the history books, but I think she also deserves a spot on the list of women who have changed pop music.

Similarities

On a base level, Madonna and Gaga have a lot in common. Both are of Italian heritage and went to Catholic schools. Both are extremely intelligent, having been straight-A students, and both struck out on their own at a young age.

Like Madonna, Lady Gaga got her start in the New York underground club scene. Similarly, Gaga’s dance chart start reminds me of Madonna’s early days. And of course, who could deny the way they each shock the mainstream with their fashion sense. Madonna’s much imitated ’80s fishnets and lace look and her barely there outfits of the Blond Ambition days turned heads then just as Lady Gaga and her persistence in forgetting to wear pants now.

Success

Of course, no matter what these ladies are wearing, there is no denying their talent. Madonna is one of the best-selling female artists in the world, having sold more than 200 million albums in her nearly 30-year career. Gaga is not off to a bad start either, with 8 million albums sold in her first year on the charts.

Though Lady Gaga is clearly an original, she may have said it best when asked about her idol, telling one interviewer, “I think what Madonna and I share is that we’re both fearless.”

You can see this fearless performer for yourself, Monday, when she takes the Mohegan Sun Arena stage for her Monster Ball Tour. The show reportedly sold out in mere minutes, so if you are lucky enough to have a ticket, get there early for opener Jason Derulo and enjoy the show!
